Toolkit

October 28, 2011 1 comment

I have now assembled my toolkit.  To non early 911 people it might seem like an odd thing but getting together a complete and good condition kit is much harder than you’d think.  In the end I believe I have all the pieces plus a nice clean bag.  Only the tow hook and sunroof winder could use a replate which I can throw into the next batch.

Needless to say this kit will not actually get used, just stored in the car for the sake of completeness.  I’ll keep regular tools for emergency breakdown work (which of course won’t be happening!).

As an extension to this I have an aftermarket air compressor but I’m happy with this.  I’m not going to lose sleep over not having the genuine pump, most of them are dead after 30 years anyway.  And as for sourcing the original gloves and plastic bag for a flat tyre – I’ll leave that for the concours guys.

Brief History

As I learn more about the history of this car I  will be updating this post.

I acquired the car in November 2009.  I had been looking for several months and the only one’s that I really liked were being sold by fellow enthusiasts.  Naturally the price tag was in line with someone who loved the car a bit too much!  So the difficulty was in finding one that was priced fairly but was also in good enough condition and specification.

At this stage I never considered an import.  Along came this one and it caught my eye.  It was imported from the UK by a guy in Adelaide who did this purely with the intention of selling it.  Importing and selling was his hobby.  Perhaps this was not ideal but the car stacked up OK as it has a full service history and the car presented as delivered by Porsche in 1983.

I was warned of Euro models based on salted roads but aside from some minor corrosion it was very similar to local models.  I knew I was going to replace lots of components so  a rusty bracket, bolt, etc was of no concern.  The body both outside and underneath looked good.  I finally justified the purchase by telling myself it had the right spec, history and was ready to enjoy from day one.  It is not the car to completely restore back to bare metal, an SC is not the right 911 for this.  Instead it is a great car to learn from and ‘refresh’ to a standard that most 911 owners would appreciate.

I know once I finish this car it will be an excellent example.  I brace myself for some heartache, plenty of $$$$, but the reward with be there.

How long will it take?  Who knows?  2 years? 5 years?  I don’t really care, I want to enjoy the journey.

Let it begin………………..

First Post!

Here we are!  Welcome to my blog.

I decided to start a blog about my 1983 Porsche 911SC.  It’s my 2nd one – owned the 1st one, a 1982 911SC around 1997 and sold it after only 2 years of owning it.  More about that car later.

When I bought my current 911SC I had every intention of just detailing it and replacing minor bits and pieces all in the pursuit of making it a ‘nice’ weekend car.  Well – all that has changed and it is starting to turn into much more of a ‘project’.  It’s not a restoration, nor a rebuild, but simply my project.

My goal is to refresh all components so that they are either new in appearance and function or with an acceptable level of patina.  I will endeavour to maintain a certain degree of originality and 911 heritage but will allow specific modifications if I believe it makes this a better car.  One criteria is that I can always return this car to 99% original – this means no body mods, roll cages, etc.

The purpose of this blog is to document the progress.  It will serve as a timeline and photographic record for all the work I am doing.  The end result is to have a car I love driving, one that I never intend to sell – unless of course I upgrade to a better 911!

I hope you enjoy the journey.
